Frequently Asked Questions

Do you offer in-person or online therapy?

We offer online therapy to adults (and sometimes teens) when clients prefer it. We see child clients in person, because we find it is far more effective than meeting online. When working with families, we are happy to hold parents’ sessions online if that is more convenient for the clients.

Who do you work with?

We work with children, teens, parents, and adult individuals. We are LGBTQ+-affirming, and welcome people of all backgrounds and ages.

What can I expect in the first session?

The first session is a chance for us to get to know each other, and explore what brings you to therapy. We’ll discuss your concerns, history, and goals, and begin thinking about a plan that feels supportive and collaborative.

How long does therapy last?

Therapy length varies depending on your needs, goals, and the issues you’re exploring. Some people benefit from short-term, focused therapy, while others choose longer-term work to address deeper patterns, relationships, or personal growth over time. Addressing complex, developmental trauma tends to take longer than issues that are less deeply rooted. With children in particular, we maintain therapy only as long as is truly necessary, which varies from a few months to a few years.

Do you accept insurance?

We are an out-of-network practice. We provide detailed superbills for you to submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement. We’re happy to discuss this with you during your consultation.

How do I get started?

You can schedule a free consultation by contacting us through our website contact form, or emailing info@mindfultherapybrooklyn.com, or calling (646) 308-1530. Terésa Stern, our clinical director, would be glad to meet with you for a free, 20-minute chat on Zoom or phone, to see whether we are a good fit for you. She can recommend which of our clinicians would be the best match, based on your needs, preferences, and schedule. You are also welcome to contact any of our clinicians directly through their email, which is listed in their profile.

What issues can therapy help with?

For children, adolescents, and parents, therapy can help with anxiety, trauma and PTSD, dysregulation, oppositional behavior, demand avoidance, attachment, gender and identity issues, sensory sensitivities, transitions, and grief. We are also experienced in working with issues related to ADHD and neurodiversity.

With our adult clients, we work with all of the above concerns as well as depression, relationship issues, self-awareness, and creative challenges.

Is therapy confidential?

Yes, therapy is confidential and we take your privacy seriously. Information shared in sessions is protected by law, with a few specific exceptions related to safety that your therapist will explain. Creating a safe and trusting space is a top priority.

How often will we meet?

Most clients come to therapy once per week, especially at the beginning. Session frequency can be adjusted over time based on your needs, progress, and availability, and this is something you and your therapist will decide together.

What if I’m nervous about starting therapy?

Feeling nervous about starting therapy is completely normal. Many clients feel unsure at first. Therapy is a non-judgmental space, and you are never pressured to share more than you’re ready for. We will encourage you to move at a pace that feels safe and comfortable.
